The settlement of at least $5.54 billion is an agreement resulting from the class action lawsuit, called In re Payment Card Interchange Fee and Merchant Discount Antitrust Litigation, MDL 1720 (MKB) (JO). The lawsuit is about claims that merchants paid excessive fees to accept Visa and Mastercard cards because Visa and Mastercard, individually, and together with their respective member banks, violated the antitrust laws. Payments won't be issued until after the end of the Claims Period, February 4, 2025. The expected date is unknown at this time because the pro rata cannot be determined until all Claims are filed, reviewed, and the Court approves the final amounts.
